What’s Comforting, Warm and Sure to Make Your Day Better? Matzo Ball Soup

Fairfax District, Los Angeles, California

Matzo Ball Soup is love in a bowl.  Comforting and warm, the concoction of chicken broth and dumplings is sure to make your day better.  I have been ordering it at delis for years. So when David Rosengarten demonstrated how to make it on his show in the early Food Network years, KO decided to make it her own specialty.

Mapping the Day

In the late 1970’s, I resided in Los Angeles near Fairfax and Wilshire.  Known as the Fairfax District and Miracle Mile, there were and still are many gastronomic, iconic, cultural, historic, retail and entertainment industry destinations to explore.  Many things have changed, but some of my favorite haunts are still dishing it up like they have for years.

Local Story

On any given Sunday, you could find me starting my morning with a cup of coffee and the Los Angeles Times at a small table in the Farmers Market at Fairfax and Third.  This was perhaps my first love affair with outdoor Farmers Markets and the world of cuisines.  After the Market, I would take in some shopping at the old May Company at Fairfax and Wilshire, or visit the La Brea Tar Pits, Los Angeles Museum of Art and Hancock Park.  All of these destinations are still vibrant today, except the fallen department store.

View from the Table

For lunch, Canters Deli on Fairfax (http://www.cantersdeli.com) cannot be surpassed for traditional deli fare.  It has been open 24/7 since 1931 and not much ever changes.  In fact, some of the servers I remember from the 70’s are still there pouring coffee, surprising diners with a plate of homemade pickles and serving the best Pastrami on Rye west of New York.  No meal at Canters can be started better than with a bowl of Matzo Ball Soup.  Like I mentioned before, it is love in a bowl.
