Lake Arrowhead, California

Back in our days as full-time residents of this picturesque lakeside resort, we frequented a local restaurant near the Lake Arrowhead Village.  We likened it to our version of the TV “Cheers” bar.  We often ordered a Parmesan-crusted sourdough sandwich with melted cheese, roast beef and tomato.  Here’s our version of the Saddleback Inn’s Beefeater Sandwich.

 

MAPPING THE DAY

A weekend getaway and resort for Southern Californians, Lake Arrowhead is an alpine community located an hour and a half east of Orange County and Los Angeles.   The gem of the area is the private lake, trimmed in boat docks of property owners.  A quaint lakeside village is a hub of shopping, entertainment and dining for visitors.  The Arrowhead Queen, which docks at the Village waters edge, cruises around the lake for ticket holders to view the natural beauty and homes of the privileged.

 

LOCAL STORY

K.O. and I lived in Lake Arrowhead full-time for many years.  She was the proprietor of a fabulous furniture and interior design store in the Lake Arrowhead Village.  I was her advertising representative for the local newspaper, The Mountain News.  Yes, that’s how we met more than 20 years ago.

 

VIEW FROM THE TABLE

We frequented a restaurant located just a block from the Village entrance called The Saddleback Inn.  It was and still is a charming setting with cozy bar and restaurant.  In the early ‘90’s, we went there two or three times a week.  The people who owned it, worked in and patronized it made it special.   They were our friends.  For us, it was a little like the TV “Cheers” bar for Lake Arrowhead locals.

 

 

One of our favorite lunch offerings was the Beefeater sandwich.  As we remember it, sourdough bread was filled with roast beef, cheese and tomato.  In the preparation, the insides were warmed and the outside of the bread was Parmesan crusted.  Here’s our version that is kicked up with a little red onion.  We hope we did it justice.
