I Left My Heart in San Francisco

San Francisco, California

MAPPING THE DAY

The city by the bay calls us back at least once or twice a year.  Each visit is unlike the previous.  Diverse neighborhoods, architecture, people, restaurants, shopping and activities fill each day in the city in a different way.

LOCAL STORY

A few years ago, we were drawn to the waterfront.  We started at the Ferry Building Marketplace.  It is a grand display of farmers market produce, fresh ingredients and all things food, especially local.  Everything from fresh San Francisco dungeness crab to artisan cheeses can be found in small shops along the huge marketplace.

A long walk down the Embarcadero leads to Pier 39.  There are ferry tours  around the bay, view restaurants, unique shops and lots of people watching.  It is touristy, but still a fun day with a view of the bay.

VIEW FROM THE TABLE

Keep walking and find Fisherman’s Wharf.  It has been the same since I was a kid.  Open air vendors cook fresh dungeness crab in boiling pots. They serve cups of clam chowder, dungeness crab and bay shrimp cocktails.  I love the bay shrimp cocktail topped with spicy cocktail sauce.  It is simple fresh seafood in the fresh sea air of San Francisco.

The perfect day is completed at the Buena Vista Cafe on Hyde at Beach.  They serve a wide variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner specialties. Top off a meal and especially the day with their famous Irish Coffee.
