Abbey Road, London, England
Beatles fans come together in droves at the iconic zebra crossing at Abbey Road Studios. After making our own memories on Abbey Road, we cruised the Underground, walked London neighborhoods and then dined on amazing Asian chicken and egg rolls. Inspired by the many cuisine cultures in London, our RoadTripFlavors recipe for Easy Peking Chicken is below. It is simple to prepare and delicious!
Mapping the Day
When I was eight, I had a stack of The Beatles bubble gum trading cards bigger than my little hands could hold. I sorted through the black and white cards every day. Images of their toothy smiles, signature haircuts and tight suits are imprinted in my memory. I can still smell the bubble gum aroma that wafted from the stack. I loved The Beatles. K.O. has similar memories and affection for the English rock band. So in London last March, we agreed that we make a pilgrimage to Abbey Road Studios and the iconic zebra crossing pictured on the front of the 1969 Abbey Road album.
Local Story
Once again, we took the Underground from Green Park station to St. John’s Wood on the Jubilee line. Exiting the station, we joined many groups of Beatle fans in the half-mile walk to Abbey Road.
We converged with scores of others at the corner of Grove End Road and Abbey Road. We just looked at the crosswalk.
What a funny thing to do, but memories of 1969 rushed back to our present. “Here Comes the Sun”, “Come Together” and “Something” tunes danced in our heads.
Groups of four took turns walking across the street for a keepsake photograph. And, we were amazed to see so many young people (20-somethings) took their turns re-enacting the cover shot. We joined in the craze, frustrating London drivers. We signed the Abbey Road Studios wall and took a last look. We love The Beatles!
View from the Table
Next stop was lunch. We were encouraged by a London frequent traveler to try Chinese food at Hakkasan in Mayfair. We walked to Maida Vale station on the Bakerloo line, transferred back to the Jubilee Oxford Station.
We walked to Berkeley Square and found the secret doors to the upscale haunt. Mmmmm, delicious.
This recipe is particularly easy. Throw a whole chicken in a Cuisinart Crockpot for five hours or substitute a roasted chicken at the grocery store. Prepare the ingredients and let guests build their own perfect Peking Chicken bites.
