Festivals in Germany

Brauneberg, Germany

MAPPING THE DAY

Festivals in Germany are an integral part of the lifestyle.  In our twelve-day visit there, we found the Brauneberger Wine and Street Festival, Spangdalem Oktoberfest, Heidelberg Herbstfest, and the granddaddy of all festivals, Munich Oktoberfest.

Brauneberg is located on the Mosel River in the Western part of the country called the Mittelmosel.  The area has been a wine producing region since the days of the Romans.  Rows of grape vines scale the steep hills that emerge from the river valley.  The area is a large producer of Riesling, a white wine, that varies from dry to sweet.

LOCAL STORY

At the Brauneberger Wine and Street Festival, booths were set up all along the riverfront and served up wine, food and local handmade crafts.  We each bought a souvenir glass and selected a Riesling Spatlase from the list of more than 25 local wines.

Then we meandered along the street with wine in hand and tasted the local fare.  We grazed on spit-roasted pork loin sandwich, potato pancakes with apple sauce, schnitzel topped with mushroom sauce, sausages, French fries and German currywurst.

VIEW FROM THE TABLE

As we gazed over the river to the steep hills from the open air tables, we ate, drank, talked and listened to live music.  Prost!
