The Gift

The Gift

Montreal, Canada What a day for a foodie tour! Every aspect was a gift. The weather could not have been better for the many stops on our itinerary. Along the way we made many food discoveries. Our first recipe inspired by the day in Montreal is Pepper Feta Dip (see recipe below). Feta has never tasted so good whipped with olive oil, roasted red peppers, garlic and a little heat.   Mapping the Day She called at 9:15 a.m. to let us know she was on her way. At 9:50 a.m., she arrived at the front of our downtown Montreal hotel in her...

New Orleans in Our Hearts

New Orleans, Louisiana Ten years ago today, K.O. and I, along with our three adult children, watched images on television of New Orleans after Katrina hit. We were still in shock really. Just the day before on August 28, we escaped on the last flight out of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport before it was shut down ahead of the hurricane. We were so fortunate to be home, but we could not shake our heartbreak for the people we had just spent four joyful days with in the Big Easy. It is good to see in today’s news coverage...

For the Love of Pubs

For the Love of Pubs

London, England We love London pubs. Each watering hole reflects history, tradition, the neighborhood and local patrons. Step inside and take it all in. One of our favorite pub foods is a side dish called mushy peas. Our RoadTripFlavors version substitutes traditional marrowfat peas with easily sourced frozen peas. Click on the recipe link below.   Mapping the Day A catchy name, unique signage and warm architecture will lure you. Then smell the aroma of spilled brew wafting from the wooden floors. Hear the thunder of friendly...

Balboa Island Power Walk

Balboa Island Power Walk

Balboa Island, California A power walk around Balboa Island is only better when nutritional breaks are included. We recently tried the long-standing island Chinese restaurant on Marine. We loved the food and the price, but we still like our RoadTripFlavors egg rolls the best.  Not Chinese at all, our rolls are more the Filipino-style Lumpia. See our recipe for Vegetable Lumpia and Dipping Sauce below.   Mapping the Day The perimeter of Balboa Island is about 1 3/4 miles. Flat, sidewalk power walking along the Newport Bay is a welcome...

Beatles Fans Come Together on Abbey Road

Abbey Road, London, England Beatles fans come together in droves at the iconic zebra crossing at Abbey Road Studios. After making our own memories on Abbey Road, we cruised the Underground, walked London neighborhoods and then dined on amazing Asian chicken and egg rolls. Inspired by the many cuisine cultures in London, our RoadTripFlavors recipe for Easy Peking Chicken is below. It is simple to prepare and delicious!   Mapping the Day When I was eight, I had a stack of The Beatles bubble gum trading cards bigger than my little hands...

Crafted in Santa Ana

Santa Ana, California Who knew there is a thriving craft beer scene in Santa Ana? We took a Saturday afternoon walk in Downtown Santa Ana and found some very cool spots to people watch and relax with a few cold ones. We also loved the Brussels sprouts chips with our beer at our first stop. Try the RoadTripFlavors version with the recipe below. Mapping the Day In the nearly 20 years that we have lived in Orange County, we have rarely thought of Santa Ana as a destination. Yes, a summons for jury duty every few years took us to the downtown...
